Tech Talk Tuesdays - The Future of Hip Hop in Silicon Valley
Hip Hop culture and rap music has always been key influences in society but today the interest in the Hip Hop culture has emerged into different markets and more particularly the technology market.
Silicon Valley has since 2012 dived into The Hip Hop culture when Rap Genius, a site that annotates rap lyrics, literature, and poetry. In 2012, prominent Silicon Valley firm Andreessen Horowitz invested in $15 million in the site.
As technology has found its way into the Hip Hop industry we see artists take on their own personal ventures into the tech market.
A great example of this was Jay Z that partnered up with Aspiro in 2014 and created TIDAL, the subscription-based music streaming service that combines lossless audio and high-definition music videos with exclusive content and curated editorial celebrating the culture of music. The service has over 46 million tracks and 192,000 music videos. Tidal pays the highest percentage of royalties to music artists and songwriters within the music streaming market.
Another example into the world of Hip Hop and Technology emerging together is how we saw a virtual 2D imagery of Tupac at Coachella. Creating a show stopping performance and opened the door into innovation that could change the way artists perform on stage. The future of Hip Hop is taking an innovating step into the technological hub.
We see more and more artists venture out into different markets one of them being the world technology, moving into a more globalized market its important as an artist to have a diverse interest in venturing out into different markets. TIDAL is a great example on how an idea can turn into a game changer.
